KAMPALA, Uganda — Seven high-ranking generals of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) have begun the process of retirement, documenting their departure at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA) headquarters in Mbuya on Tuesday.
The Chief of Joint Staff, Maj. Gen. Jack Bakasumba, praised the generals for their exceptional service, particularly in capacity building and leadership within the force.
“These leaders have made remarkable contributions to national and regional peace, especially through international missions such as those in Somalia,” Bakasumba said.
The generals preparing for retirement are Lt. Gen. Peter Elwelu; Maj. Gens. Hudson Mukasa, Francis Ben Okello and George Igumba; and Brig. Gens. John Byuma, Dominic Twesigomwe and Augustine Kamyuka Kyazze.
Bakasumba emphasized that retirement is a necessary phase of military progression, allowing younger officers to rise through the ranks while ensuring continuity within the institution.
He urged the retirees to remain steadfast in the values of the UPDF and to embrace their new chapter with purpose.
Bakasumba also highlighted proposed amendments to the UPDF Act, 2005, which would offer greater welfare support, including access to healthcare, disability compensation and full burial honours.
“There is a whole new kind of life ahead, full of experience, just waiting to happen. Some call it retirement, I call it bliss,” Bakasumba quoted American biochemist Betty Sullivan as saying.
Brig. Gen. James Kinalwa, Joint Staff Human Resource Management, advised the generals to prioritize their health and conduct, urging them to maintain the discipline that defined their military service as they reintegrate into civilian life.
The function was attended by MODVA officials, members of the Joint Services legal team and representatives from the Veterans Legal Aid Clinics.
