Uganda’s cities ranked by population: Kampala, Mbarara, Gulu and Masaka lead the way

Dr. Chris N. Mukiza, Executive Director and Census Commissioner of the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS), addresses the press during the release of the 2024 National Population and Housing Census preliminary results at Serena Hotel, Kampala.

The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has released census figures revealing the population sizes of cities across the country. According to the data, Kampala City has the largest population, with 1,875,834 residents, out of which 912,237 are male and 963,597 are female.

Mbarara City follows closely, with a population of 261,656, comprising 126,451 males and 135,205 females. Gulu City has 232,723 residents, with 113,519 males and 119,204 females. Masaka City has 285,509 residents, with 137,871 males and 147,638 females. Hoima City has 141,442 residents, with 68,419 males and 73,023 females.

The census figures also reveal that Mbale City has 133,764 residents, with 64,419 males and 69,345 females. Jinja City has 292,386 residents, with 143,519 males and 148,867 females. Arua City has 380,824 residents, with 185,201 males and 195,623 females. Fort Portal City has 135,702 residents, with 65,339 males and 70,363 females. Lira City has 246,437 residents, with 119,119 males and 127,318 females.

The data shows a significant shift towards urbanization, with many cities experiencing rapid growth. This trend is expected to continue, with implications for urban planning, infrastructure development, and service delivery.

“The data will inform decisions on infrastructure development, healthcare, education, and economic planning,” said Dr. Chris N. Mukiza, Executive Director and Census Commissioner of UBOS. “We are committed to providing accurate and reliable data to support Uganda’s development.”
