Most Rev. Luigi Bianco, the Papal Nuncio, bids an emotional farewell to Uganda, reflecting on the nation’s “generosity, warmth, and faith” as he concludes his diplomatic mission.

KAMPALA, Uganda — His Excellency, Most Rev. Luigi Bianco, the Apostolic Nuncio to Uganda, concluded his diplomatic mission with a farewell courtesy call on Henry Okello Oryem, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs (International Affairs).

The Vatican’s envoy is set to depart Uganda by Sunday for his next assignment in Lovania, where he will assume duties by June 20, 2025.

Archbishop Bianco expressed profound gratitude to Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the “immense support, hospitality, and kindness” extended to him during his tenure. He specifically highlighted his appreciation for the President’s special condolence message on the passing of the late Pope Francis, and for delegating Vice President Jesca Alupo to sign the condolence book at the Apostolic Nunciature.

Reflecting on his time in the Pearl of Africa, the Nuncio shared his deep affection for the nation. “I have been deeply touched by the generosity, warmth, and faith of the Ugandan people,” he said. “This country has a special spirit — and I will truly miss Uganda.” His words resonated with the strong Catholic heritage and vibrant Christian life that defines much of Uganda.

Minister Okello, in turn, extended heartfelt thanks to the Nuncio for his dedicated service and friendship.

He affirmed that Archbishop Bianco’s presence had significantly enriched the spiritual and diplomatic ties between the Republic of Uganda and the Holy See, reinforcing a relationship deeply rooted in shared faith and mutual respect.
