KAMPALA, Uganda — The Electricity Distribution Company Limited (UEDCL) has released its new retail electricity tariffs set to take effect for the third quarter of 2025, spanning from July to September. The revised rates, which apply to all electricity end-users, have been approved by the Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA).
According to the published schedule, the tariffs cover various customer categories, including domestic, commercial, medium consumers, large industrial, extra large industrial, and public amenities.
For domestic consumers (Code 10.1), the first 15 kilowatt-hours (kWh) in a month will be charged at UGX 250.0 per kWh. Consumption between 16 and 80 kWh, and from 81 to 150 kWh, will be billed at UGX 752.0 per kWh. Any consumption above 150 kWh will also be charged at UGX 752.0 per kWh. The average tariff for domestic users is set at UGX 650.8 per kWh.
Commercial consumers (Code 10.2) will see an average tariff of UGX 546.4 per kWh, with variations for peak, shoulder, and off-peak periods.
Large industrial consumers, particularly those in manufacturing (Code 30.1) with high voltage or maximum demand up to 1,500kVA, will face an average tariff of UGX 282.9 per kWh. Extra large industrial consumers (Code 40) will have an average tariff of UGX 203.6 per kWh. Public hospitals and street lighting providers (Code 50) will pay an average of UGX 360.0 per kWh.
UEDCL noted that the schedule of tariffs applies to all customers, with specific provisions for those on the prepayment (Yaka) system.
For domestic customers on Yaka whose consumption exceeds 100 units, a fixed charge applies, with the first 15 units charged at a wholesale tariff of UGX 250 per unit.
Other charges, such as fixed monthly fees, maximum demand charges, inspection fees, new connection charges, reconnection fees, and penalties for power theft, remain unchanged.
The utility also highlighted that the declining block tariff is applicable to large industrial consumers (Code 30.1) and manufacturing entities with a maximum demand exceeding 100,000kVA.
The ERA recently introduced new tariff categories specifically for customers engaged in manufacturing and production services, which include Extra Large Industrial Consumers and Large Industrial Consumers.
