KAMPALA, Uganda (April 20, 2025)— Aspiring undergraduate students looking to join Makerere University for the 2025-2026 academic year can now navigate the entire admissions process online. The institution has streamlined its application procedure for private-sponsored students who have completed their Advanced Level (A’ Level) studies, making it accessible from anywhere. Here’s a comprehensive guide to everything you need to know.

Who Can Apply?

Makerere University is currently accepting applications from Ugandan, East African, and international students who have completed their A’ Levels. For those interested in day programs, you must have sat your UACE in 2022, 2023, or 2024. However, if you’re considering evening, afternoon, or external programs, there are no restrictions on when you completed your A’ Levels. All applicants must possess a Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) with at least five passes (or its equivalent) and a minimum of two principal passes in the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) obtained in a single sitting. Note that candidates with ‘O’ Level grades X, Y, Z, 7, and 9 are not eligible.

The Step-by-Step Online Application Process:

The entire application process is conducted online through the university’s admissions portal: https://apply.mak.ac.ug/. Here’s a breakdown of the steps:

  1. Registration: Begin by clicking on the “REGISTER NOW” button. You will need to provide your full name (ensure it matches your academic documents), a valid email address, and your mobile phone number.
  2. Password Setup: Once registered, a temporary password will be sent to your provided mobile number and email address. You will then be prompted to change this to a password you can easily remember.
  3. Application Form: Click on the “APPLY NOW” button associated with the “Private Undergraduate” scheme for the 2025-2026 academic year. Carefully fill out all the required fields in the application form.
  4. Payment Reference: After completing the form, click on the “Pay for Form” button to generate a unique payment reference number. This number is crucial for paying the application fee.
  5. Application Fee Payment: The non-refundable application fee is 50,000 Ugandan shillings for Ugandan, East African, and South Sudanese applicants, or $75 USD (or its equivalent) for international applicants. This fee, along with any applicable bank charges, can be paid at any bank that works with the Uganda Revenue Authority. Alternatively, you can use mobile money:

* Dial 2726# on your MTN or Airtel line.
* Select option 3 for “Admission.”
* Select option 3 again for “Pay Fees.”
* Enter the reference number you obtained from the application portal.
* The system will display your application details for confirmation.
* Enter your mobile money PIN to complete the payment.

Important Dates and Warnings:

The deadline for submitting your online application for undergraduate programs is Tuesday, May 20, 2025.

Makerere University’s Academic Registrar, Prof. Buyinza Mukadasi, has issued a strong warning against the submission of forged academic documents. Any such attempts will lead to severe consequences. Additionally, applicants are advised to only rely on information provided directly by the Academic Registrar’s Office and to avoid engaging with individuals claiming to be agents soliciting additional funds. It is also crucial to use the correct program names and codes when applying, as the university will not be responsible for applicant errors.

For more detailed information on the weighting system for different programs and a list of available courses with their fee structures, visit the university website or contact the Undergraduate Admissions Office. Applying to Makerere University for the new academic year is now at your fingertips – ensure you follow the guidelines carefully and submit your application before the deadline.
