Kampala, Uganda – President Yoweri Museveni has appointed Dr. Michael Atingi-Ego as the new Governor of the Bank of Uganda, the country’s central bank.

Atingi-Ego, who has been serving as the Deputy Governor, takes over from the late Prof. Tumusiime Mutebile. The new governor is an economist with a PhD from Liverpool University.

Atingi-Ego’s academic background includes a BSc in Economics from Makerere University and an MSc in Economics from Cardiff Business School. Prior to his appointment as Deputy Governor, he served as the Executive Director of the Macroeconomics and Financial Management Institute of Eastern and Southern Africa (MEFMI) in Harare, Zimbabwe.

In recent years, Atingi-Ego has been a vocal advocate for the development of capital markets in Uganda. He has emphasized the importance of these markets in achieving the country’s Ten-Fold Growth Strategy.

Atingi-Ego has also called for greater collaboration between stakeholders to reform the pension sector, create new investment products, and increase financial transparency.

President Museveni has also named Prof. Agustus Nuwagaba as the new Deputy Governor of the Bank of Uganda.

Nuwagaba is an international consultant on economic transformation with expertise in fiscal policy, financial management, and economic development.

He holds an MBA in application of central bank monetary policy on commercial bank competitiveness.

Nuwagaba has worked extensively with governments and international organisations across Africa. He has provided consultancy services on fiscal metrics, financial performance, and tax policies.
