The National Resistance Movement’s top organ, the Central Executive Committee has selected Jacob Oulanyah as its candidate for the Speakership of the 11th Parliament.
This however does not make Oulanyah the preferred choice for a speaker for the NRM as the CEC will only recommend to the caucus their choice of candidate for deliberations and adoption in case there is agreement.
Kadaga had expressed worries about CEC’s heavy involvement in determining the top positions in Parliament, saying the matter should be put to vote.
Kadaga said it was undemocratic for CEC to “sit five years early and say five years later so and so will be our Speaker.”
She also said they were not cattle to be selected exclusively by CEC members and questioned why a similar criterion is not applied while picking NRM’s flag bearer for President.
The election of the Speaker is scheduled for Monday next week at Kololo airstrip.
Over 300 MPs including the Deputy Leader of Government Business, Gen. Moses Ali had declared support for Kadaga before the party decision.
