KAMPALA, Uganda — Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Uganda’s chief of defense forces, has appointed Col. Deo Akiiki as his military assistant, Akiiki confirmed Friday.
Akiiki, who served as the Uganda People’s Defence Forces deputy spokesperson, said in a statement his appointment was effective immediately.

“I take this honor to officially announce that I have been appointed by the Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Advisor to H.E. on Special Operations Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba as his Military Assistant (MA),” Akiiki said.
“It is a statement of honor and trust that I’m going to serve at the helm of the leadership,” Akiiki added.
Akiiki thanked journalists for their cooperation during his more than 20 years in military public relations. He cited his work as a public information officer during the Lord’s Resistance Army conflict in northern Uganda, the UPDF mission in Somalia and Operation Lightning Thunder in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He had served as deputy spokesperson for the past seven years.
Akiiki’s career also includes international experience.
In 2012, he was a delegate to the U.S. Human Rights Foreign Policy program in Washington D.
In 2014, he served as the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) Public Information Officer in Mogadishu.
In 2015, he was appointed Director of Strategic Communication at the Ministry of Defence and also attended the European Center for Security Studies in Germany.
From 2016 to 2017, he studied strategic security studies at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C. He was appointed deputy spokesperson for the Ministry of Defence and Veterans Affairs in 2017.
