Ugandan long-distance ace Joshua Cheptegei on Saturday won the San Silvestre 10km road race in Madrid Spain.
Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei wins the Durban 10km in South Africa, with compatriot Emmanuel Kibet third, as he builds towards a half and full marathon.

Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei says his “speed is still there” after winning the Durban 10km in South Africa — his second road race victory in the country.

The world record holder and Olympic champion was joined on the podium by compatriot Emmanuel Kibet, who finished third in a strong showing for Kampala.

“It’s good to see that the speed for the shorter distance is still there,” said Cheptegei, who has recently focused on longer events.

The 10,000m great, who thanked God for the win, said resilience remained central to his approach.

“The sport always has lots of setbacks, but what is very important is never giving up,” he added.

Cheptegei now turns his attention to the roads’ longer distances, with a half marathon planned in two months before a full marathon later in the year.

“I will build on this for my next half marathon in two months’ time and later the full marathon,” he said.

The Ugandan was also pleased with his preparation, describing his fuelling and nutrition as “small but great ingredients for great results coming soon”.

Kibet’s third-place finish highlighted Uganda’s growing depth in distance running, while Cheptegei signed off by thanking his fans, promising to see them soon as his marathon build-up continues.
