Judiciary in Uganda Goes Paperless

Assistant Superintendent of Police Luke Owoyesigyire, who is the Deputy Police Spokesperson for Kampala’s metropolitan area consists of the city proper and the neighboring Mukono District said Mukono Police Station received a distress call on 20th May 2023 at approximately 4:15 a.m. regarding a shooting incident that occurred earlier at around 1:00 a.m. in Nabuti Village, Mukono Central Division, Mukono Municipality, Mukono District.

“According to the preliminary investigation, it is alleged that on the aforementioned date and time, the suspect noticed someone attempting to open his main door. Suspecting a thief, the suspect peeped through the window glass and observed a person using a key to open the door. In a state of suspicion, the suspect discharged three live bullets through the window glass, hitting Nagayi Natasha on the right chest, near the lower armpit, Owoyesigyire said on Saturday morning.

“Upon being shot, the victim fell to the ground and cried out for help, asserting that she was not a thief. She specifically mentioned the name Bandishe Ashiraf, one of the tenants residing in the suspect’s residence. The caretaker of the residence, Ssengendo Hanington, along with other neighbors, responded to the scene. Subsequently, the suspect emerged from his residence.”

Owoyesigyire said further investigation revealed that the victim was accompanied by her boyfriend, Bandishe Ashiraf, outside for leisure.

Ashiraf had given her the key to enter the residence and rest while he remained behind. “However, she mistakenly attempted to open the suspect’s room, which is opposite Ashiraf’s room, leading to the unfortunate shooting incident”.

“To preserve the integrity of the crime scene, initial steps were taken by the first responders. A pistol with 12 rounds of live ammunition, was recovered from the suspect by the response Police team.”

“The victim was transported in critical condition to Kawolo Hospital for immediate medical attention.  Ongoing inquiries are being conducted to gather all pertinent details related.”

The shooting comes amid public outcry and concern over gun violence that has rocked the country and caused fear.
At least four private security guards have been shot and killed across the country barely a week after state minister for Labour, Col (rtd) Charles Engola was on May 2, 2023 shot dead by his bodyguard Pte Wilson Sabiiti at his home in Kyanja zone, Kampala.
