KAMPALA-Members of Democratic Party who are not happy with the current party leadership have brought forward a number of terms and conditions which have to be fulfilled in order to enter into mediation with the group led by Hon. Nobert Mao (Party President).
These being led by Benedicto Kiwanuka Galiko, contend that there is a request to enter into Mediation with the current Party leadership (which they consider to be illegal basing on justice Philip Odoki Ruling) on a matter currently before Court of Appeal.
“The matter has never been heard for all along, every time we appear in court , something new is introduced and then the matter losses focus. On the issue of mediation, on several occasions we have been approached on individual basis.” remarked Galiko
He says that they can’t enter into mediation without knowing it’s importance or aim. “The other side has to concede that they bleached the Party constitution and we find means of reuniting as members of the same family.”
“Justice Philip Odoki’s ruling was Clear that the group’s actions were illegal and so engaging in mediation without first getting any clarification on that court position will be wastage of time.”
Galiko also emphasized that , there is need to have assurance that key stakeholders in the matter will attend the mediation in person, without delegating their Assistants or other people of their choice.
In 2024, High Court ruled that it was illegal for the Democratic Party “Leaders” led by Hon Nobert Mao to continue holding internal party elections without following DP’s constitution.
Court also ordered that these had to step aside and an independent committee had to be instituted to manage the party affairs, until the situation normalizes.
Democratic Party leaders who were not satisfied with the above decision, decided to appeal but this was not successful since they failed to fulfill all the legal requirements including serving Mr. Galiko Benedicto , the applicant in the High Court matter which resulted into the ruling.
These petitioned court of Appeal, seeking for extension of time with in which to file their notice of Appeal. Justice Monica Mugyenyi acting as single justice of appeal, allowed the application and extended the time which the appeal had to be filed.
