KAMPALA -Benedicto Kiwanuka Galiko, one of the long time members of Democratic Party (DP) behind a number of cases contesting the legality of Hon. Nobert Mao’s leadership, has called upon all party members not to be duped to participate in matters against DP’s constitution.

Benedicto Kiwanuka Galiko , a Democratic Party member

On addressing the media in Kampala, Galiko noted that it’s wrong for the current party leadership to declare 30th May 2025 as the date for the Party’s National Delegates conference without following all the set out guidelines in the Party constitution.

“There is unchallenged judgement of Justice Philip Odoki which declared the current party leadership as illegal, since it has no appeal, it means that it still stands. Secondly there is a pending case of contempt before justice Douglas Singiza against the same group.”

He pointed out that with all the above, the delegates conference can only be organized by an interim committee instituted with the guidance of Court.

“Under normal circumstances, as Democratic Party we have a clear guideline which has to be followed before organizing the National Delegates conference. It starts with elections at grass root (village) level, after which NEC (legally constituted) calls a meeting to formulate the road map which is later cleared by the National council.

That after that , election materials are transported from NEC, to District, Constituency, Parish, Sub Parish and then village level

“We all know that this process has not been properly followed and it can’t be finalized within the remaining weeks because it takes some time. We had that they will be choosing people to participate, oba under which criteria , because the party has well known procedures.”

He added that most of DP members have not yet legally renewed their membership status (Payment annual subscription) , because there is no legally recognized party leadership to handle the process.

On addressing the press last week during DP’s weekly press briefings at their Balintuma Rd office, Mao report a number of resolutions from the Party’s National Council which was held in Soroti.

He revealed that National Delegates Conference will be held on 30th March 2025 and it’s during this meeting that they will discuss in dept a number of issues concerning the Party.

Mao also reported that, the National Executive Committee and the National Council resolved that the cooperation agreement between the Democratic Party and the National Resistance Movement be formally received and adopted as a working document of the party.
