KAMPALA, Uganda — The Ministry of Education and Sports has postponed the reopening of all schools and educational institutions to Feb. 10 to ensure the safety of learners during the upcoming general elections.
The decision, announced Friday by Permanent Secretary Kedrace Turyagyenda, pushes back the start of the 2026 academic year from the previously scheduled date of Feb. 2.
The ministry confirmed the directive applies to all levels of education, including international schools, tertiary institutions and universities. The revised schedule for the first term now runs from Feb. 10 through May 1.
Education officials have instructed vice chancellors, principals and headteachers to adhere strictly to the updated calendar. The ministry also advised parents and students that the full approved schedule is available on its official website.
