Environmentalist, Muramuzi Passes on

KAMPALA -Sombre mood at,National Association of Professional Environmentalists (NAPE), following the passing away of Mr. Frank Muramuzi, their founding member and Executive.

According to Muramuzi’s family and friends, he passed away on Monday morning from Nakasero Hospital, Kampala.

Muramuzi, was born at 12th December 1962.

He has been the Executive Director and founding member of NAPE, he was the former Chairperson of East African Communities Organizations for the Management of Lake Victoria Resources (ECOVIC), Uganda Chapter, Board Member of Uganda Coalition for Sustainable Development (UCSD), founding member of African Rivers Network (ARN), Member of Dams and Development Forum (DDP) of UNEP based in Nairobi.

He was vocal during the Save Mabira Crusade campaign, which was against giving away part of Mabira Forest land to investors to grow more Sugar can back in the early 2000.

He is also among the pioneer environmental activists that founded the friends of the earth (FOE) federation and was the first chair of the membership development board.

He is also currently a board member of the National Association for Women in Development (NAWAD) Uganda, the East African Coordinator of the Oil Watch Network that begun its first mobilization from the Albertine oil rift in early 2O00s when Uganda begun active oil extraction (2006) and also serves as the founding father of the NAPE Led Community Green Radio and the grassroot women led movement in Uganda.

Mr. Muramuzi has in his Environmental Advocacy and human rights protection journey spearheaded efforts to save the Mabira Forest, bugoma forest, advocated for the rights of people affected by the Bujagli dam, spearheaded efforts to promote alternative energy in Uganda and East Africa, and fought many advocacy struggles in Uganda and across the globe to protect the environment and communities from big development projects.

He also very popular in the media fraternity locally, regionally and internationally on issues of human and environmental rights protection.
