
The third edition of the SOM Easter Chess Championships wrapped up in style on Monday evening at the SOM Chess Academy headquarters in Katwe, Makindye, with rising talents showcasing impressive skill across various categories.
Defending champion Nsubuga Haruna once again stamped his authority on the board, successfully retaining the Men’s Open title after collecting seven points from eight rounds.
Haruna sealed his triumph in a high-stakes final showdown against Wanyama Harold, becoming the first player to defend the title in the tournament’s history.
In the Women’s Open section, Asaba Juliet emerged victorious after an equally strong performance, finishing with seven points following a closely fought contest against Asiimwe Olivia.

The four-day championship attracted about 100 participants drawn from different parts of the country, including players from SOM centres and clubs in Gulu, Kiboga, Katwe and beyond.
Competition was spread across several categories, namely the Open, Ladies, U10, U12, U14, U16, U19, U20, 50+ and the Disabled section, with both boys and girls taking part.
At the end of eight intense rounds, winners in the various divisions were rewarded with trophies, medals, cash prizes, chess boards, smart watches and certificates.
SOM Chess Academy proprietor Robert Katende praised the tournament’s success, highlighting its growing impact on the development of the game.
He noted that the championship also serves as vital preparation for upcoming international assignments, including the Africa Chess Youth Games set to be hosted in Uganda at Botanical Beach, as well as the Chess Olympiad.
Katende also extended gratitude to partners and supporters for their continued contribution to the academy’s mission of transforming lives through chess.
