KITENDE, Uganda — Dr. John Spire Kiggundu, a prominent gynecologist and founder of Henrob Laparoscopy Hospital in Zzana, was found dead Sunday, his brother, Dr. Jim Spire Ssentongo, announced on X (formerly Twitter).
“I announce the sudden passing of my brother, Dr John Spire Kiggundu of Henrob Hospital-Zzana,” Dr. Ssentongo wrote on the platform. Dr. Ssentongo is a lecturer at Makerere University and a prominent government critic.
A nurse at Henrob Hospital stated Kiggundu was last seen at the medical facility Saturday. Family members reported him missing after he did not return home Saturday night. Family and police reviewed CCTV footage, which showed Kiggundu’s vehicle traveling toward Kitende, a town council within Kajjansi. His body was discovered in the area Sunday afternoon.
Authorities have not released details regarding the circumstances or cause of Kiggundu’s death. Police have not issued a formal statement, but investigations are ongoing.
Dr. Kiggundu was a renowned gynecologist, obstetrician, endometriosis surgeon, and fertility specialist. He was widely recognized for his expertise in Minimal Access Surgery, specifically laparoscopic surgery in gynecology, and his work assisting couples with fertility challenges. He was also actively involved in raising awareness and providing specialized care for endometriosis through his association with the PanAfrican Endometriosis Center (EndoAfrica).
As the founder and director of Henrob Laparoscopy Hospital, located at Zana along Entebbe Road in Kampala, he served as a leading gynecologist. Dr. Kiggundu had also trained over 70 specialists in minimal access surgery. His professional affiliations included serving as President of the Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons of Uganda (ALASU) and President of the World Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons – Ugandan Chapter. He was also an Associate Member of the Royal College of Gynaecologists (RCOG) in the United Kingdom and a Member of the World Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons (WALES).
Beyond his clinical practice, Dr. Kiggundu was the Executive Director of the Padre Pio Rural Development Initiative (PAPIRUDEI), a local non-governmental organization dedicated to bridging healthcare gaps and promoting community development, notably through Padre Pio Hospital-Butozi. He had received fellowships in Minimal Access Surgery from WLH Delhi and in ART from India.
