How leaders mourned BoU Governor Mutebile

The late former Governor of Bank of Uganda Prof. Emmanuel Tumusiime Mutebile who passed on Sunday at 5:30 am while receiving treatment at a Nairobi hospital has been hailed as a great architect of Uganda’s economic recovery.

Several national leaders took to social media to heap praise on the late Governor saying the country was better off today because of the reforms he spearheaded and the service he rendered.

The Speaker of Parliament, Jacob Oulanyah, has mourned Central Bank Governor, Prof. Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile as one who helped steer Uganda’s economic recovery after collapse in the 1970s and 80s amid political upheaval during the rule of presidents Idi Amin and Milton Obote.

“Saddened by the demise of Prof. Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile.
We salute him for meritorious service as Governor of the Bank of Uganda and superintending economic recovery and stability,” Speaker Oulanyah, tweeted on Sunday afternoon.

Makerere University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe said, “I am saddened by the news of the passing on of our gallant alumnus Prof. Mutebile who has also been the Governor of the Bank of Uganda. While at Makerere, Professor Mutebile served as Guild President.”

Seasoned journalist Andrew Mwenda said, “Mutebile, this great architect of Uganda’s economic recovery, this titan of our banking industry, this intelligent, magnanimous and generous soul, this friend of all and enemy of no one, rested this morning at 5.30 am. RIP my friend! You have been a true giant!”

Ramathan Ggoobi the Secretary to the Treasury said, “I am saddened to learn the passing of Prof. Mutebile, one of the grandfathers of Uganda’s modern economy. We are better off today because of the reforms he spearheaded and the service he rendered. My sincere sympathies to his family and BoU.”

Works and Transport Minister General Edward Katumba Wamala said, “I am saddened by the news of the passing away of Prof. Mutebile. My deepest sympathies to the staff members at BoU.”

David Bahati the Minister for State for Trade said, “Sad news: Our elder brother and great economist Governor Prof. Mutebile has rested. His contribution to maintaining the macro-economic stability of our economy will forever be remembered. His generous heart touched many lives. He left a legacy of hard work & discipline in public service. Condolences to Aunt Betty, family, Kigezi fraternity and the country. Rest In Peace.”

 

DDeputysSpeaker Anita Among also mourned Prof Mutebile saying, “ The great Icon of our economic Journey as a Country,a banking genius and a patriot has rested.We shall hold on to his legacy of dedication to the service of his Country. RIPProf.Mutebile.”
