KAMPALA — A man has been charged in court for allegedly kidnapping his one-year-old son with intent to use him for ritual sacrifice.
Samuel Tumwesigye was on Monday, November 15, 2021, arraigned before Wakiso Chief Magistrate’s Court, on charges of aggravated human trafficking and remanded to prison until 29th November 2021.
He was arrested by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit and police after his wife, Ms. Rebecca Turihamwe, reported that on October 17,2021, he kidnapped their one-year-old son Mugabo Divine Alpha from their home in Bulenga and took him with intentions to sacrifice him for Shs80 million.
Upon receiving the complaint, the Rapid Response Unit coordinated with the police through OC CID Wakiso police and the suspect was tracked and arrested in Katwe.
According to the Commissioner for Child Protection and Family Department, Ms Maureen Atuhaire, the suspect made confessions to police that he took the child and sacrificed him in Mabira but the police failed to find the remains of the child.
“These confession that didn’t add up increased suspicion and we keenly continued to follow up this matter with the police until a missing child was found on November 14th, 2021 alive with Ms. Amumpaire Grace a sister to the suspect,” she said on Monday.
Col Edith Nakalema, the head of the State House Anti-Corruption Unit, commended the police for acting fast to arrest the suspect.
She cautioned the public to be vigilant and never keep a child without the consent of both parents and to ensure that the children are protected.
