SHANGHAI, China — Huawei released a new metric designed to guide the global energy industry, unveiling its Global Digitalization and Intelligence Index (GDII) Report for the Power Industry at the HUAWEI CONNECT 2025 Global Electric Power Summit on Wednesday.
The report aims to provide power companies with a quantitative tool and strategic framework for navigating digital transformation and building future power systems.
AI Deemed ‘Survival Essential’
During the summit, experts emphasized that digital and intelligent enablement is critical for managing the growing complexities of modern power grids.
Jo Cops, chairman of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), noted that ensuring the stability of power systems now hinges on real-time operational monitoring of low-voltage grids, given the “widespread adoption of PV systems, electric vehicle charging piles and microgrids.”
David Sun, CEO of Huawei’s Electric Power Digitalization Business Unit, went further, stating that artificial intelligence has been “elevated from an ‘efficiency tool’ to a ‘survival essential'” in the power sector.
Huawei’s strategy, guided by principles like an “intelligent and robust main network” and “low-voltage transparency,” utilizes a multi-layered technical system to offer solutions across power generation, transmission, distribution and consumption.
Real-World Application Showcased
To demonstrate its capabilities, Huawei and State Grid Shaanxi jointly released the 2025 Global Electric Power Showcase. Through joint innovation and large-scale verification in Shaanxi, the companies achieved transparency in low-voltage 400-volt transformer districts. This allows for real-time perception, centralized management and rapid response for the supervision of low-voltage distributed new energy sources.
The summit also featured international perspectives, with Charles Tlouane, COO of City Power from South Africa, and Simon Dezsö, Deputy CEO of Hungary’s MAVIR, sharing first-hand experiences and challenges in their companies’ digitalization journeys.
Huawei stated it will continue to inject intelligence into core electric power production scenarios to help global power companies move toward a smarter and more sustainable future.
