KAMPALA, UGANDA — Makerere University, a premier institution of higher learning in Africa, boasts a rich history spanning over nine decades.

Established in 1922 as a technical college, Makerere University was initially affiliated with the University of London until 1963, when it became one of the three constituent colleges of the University of East Africa. The university gained independence in 1970 and has since become a leading institution in the region.

The university’s history is a testament to its commitment to academic excellence and its role in shaping the minds of future leaders. From its humble beginnings as a technical college to its current status as a world-renowned institution, Makerere University has consistently demonstrated its ability to adapt and evolve in response to changing educational needs.

The university’s sprawling estate, which covers over 350 acres, is a key factor in its success. The main campus, located on Makerere Hill, is just 5 kilometers from the city center and provides a picturesque backdrop for academic pursuits. The university also has a College of Health Sciences campus located on Mulago Hill, adjacent to the National Referral Hospital.

In addition to its academic programs, Makerere University also has a range of facilities that support student life and learning. These include the Agricultural Research Institute, Kabanyolo, the Buyana Stock Farm, and several residential housing estates.

The university’s residential housing estates, which include Kololo, Katalemwa, Makindye, Makerere North, and Bwaise, provide students with a range of accommodation options that cater to different needs and budgets.

Makerere University offers an impressive range of academic programs, with over 145 undergraduate programs, including 11 diplomas and 134 bachelor’s programs. These programs are designed to provide students with a solid foundation in their chosen field of study and equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in an increasingly competitive job market.

The university also offers over 139 postgraduate programs, including 17 postgraduate diplomas and 135 master’s degree programs. These programs are designed to provide students with advanced training in their chosen field of study and equip them with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in leadership positions.

Makerere University’s commitment to academic excellence is also evident in its provision for doctoral degrees. The university offers doctoral degrees by research only or by coursework and dissertation, providing students with the flexibility to pursue their research interests in a way that suits their needs and goals.

The university’s School of Distance and Lifelong Learning also offers adult education and extramural programs through its nine centers. These programs are designed to provide adults with the opportunity to pursue further education and training, regardless of their background or circumstances.
