Kadaga congratulates Oulanyah for winning the race for Speaker of the 11th Parliament

KAMPALA — Former Speaker of Parliament Rebecca Kadaga had congratulated the new Speaker Jacob Oulanyah upon winning the race for Speaker of the 11th Parliament.

Jacob Oulanyah polled 310 votes while Kadaga got 197.

Kira Municipality MP, Ibrahim Ssemujju became a distant 3rd with 15 votes.

Oulanyah was officially declared the winner of the Speakership race for the 11th Parliament by the Chief Justice Alphonse Owiny Dollo.

The total number of valid votes cast was 522, 2 votes were invalid. According to CJ Alfonse Owiny-Dollo, one of the members chose both Kadaga and Oulanyah while the other wrote a name of a person who is a stranger to the contest.

Oulanyah becomes the 10th individual to head Uganda’s legislative arm of government since the country gained her independence in 1962.

The first sitting of the 11th Parliament was chaired by Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo and attended by President Yoweri Museveni.

“I am truly humbled to be elected Speaker of this Parliament and I promise to work together with the Deputy Speaker that you will select to repay the confidence you showed when you elected me as Speaker,” Jacob Oulanyah said in his first address as a Speaker of the 11th Parliament.
