
KAMPALA, Uganda — Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament Hellen Nakimuli has died following a surgical procedure, according to an announcement made Sunday by National Unity Platform leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu.
The opposition lawmaker, a prominent figure within the NUP, represented the island district in the 11th Parliament. Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, shared the news on social media, describing the death as shocking and calling for strength for her family and colleagues.
Known to her constituents as “Mama Kalangala,” Nakimuli was a vocal advocate for the Ssese Islands. Throughout her tenure, she focused on improving water transport, supporting the local fishing industry and seeking government relief for communities affected by natural disasters.
Beyond her legislative duties, Nakimuli was an accomplished athlete. She served as the captain of the Ugandan parliamentary ladies’ volleyball team and played for the COBAP Volleyball Club.
Official details regarding the nature of the surgery and funeral arrangements have not yet been disclosed by her family or the parliament.
