KAMPALA, Uganda — The Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) announced Sunday that the Kampala–Mukono passenger train service will resume on Monday, April 14, 2025, following a brief suspension for urgent repairs.
The commuter train, a popular option for daily travelers since its revival in June 2024, was halted on April 6 to allow for repair work along the line, particularly at the Namanve embankment.

In a statement, URC confirmed the completion of the necessary works and assured the public that thorough safety checks had been conducted.
“Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) is pleased to inform the general public and all our esteemed passengers that the works on the embankment at Namanve have been concluded and the railway line between Mukono and Kampala is now safe for train operations,” the statement said.
The corporation emphasized that its technical teams had conducted a detailed review before clearing the route for the resumption of services.
“Following successful restoration works and comprehensive safety assessments by our technical teams, commuter and passenger train services will resume on 14th April 2025 as previously communicated,” the statement added.
Since its relaunch, the Kampala–Mukono train service has become a favored mode of transportation due to its affordability and efficiency, particularly for commuters between Mukono and Kampala. Trains often operate at full capacity during peak hours, with high demand reported from Mukono through Namanve.
Passengers have frequently praised the railway for its role in alleviating traffic congestion on major highways and reducing their transportation expenses.
With the resumption of operations, regular commuters are expected to return to what they consider a more reliable and cost-effective way to travel.
