Karuma, Ayago Bridges Closure: Motorists Advised to Plan Alternative Routes
Karuma and Ayago bridges on the Kampala-Gulu Highway will reopen to traffic Monday, April 14 after three weeks of maintenance.

KAMPALA, Uganda  — After a three-week closure for critical maintenance, traffic is scheduled to resume Monday morning on the Karuma and Ayago bridges along the Kampala-Gulu Highway, the Ministry of Works and Transport announced.

The ministry said in a statement over the weekend that essential structural upgrades, specifically the installation and curing of expansion joints, have been completed. The temporary closure began March 24.

“These are critical components that allow the bridge structure to expand and contract with temperature changes and traffic loads, thereby maintaining its structural integrity and extending its lifespan,” the ministry said.

The closure forced motorists to use longer detours, causing travel disruptions and delays in the movement of goods between the northern and central regions.

“These works were necessary for public safety and the long-term preservation of vital national infrastructure,” the ministry added. “We thank all road users and stakeholders for their patience and cooperation during this essential maintenance period.”

While the bridges will reopen to all road users, the ministry noted that some minor work will continue without affecting traffic flow. This includes the installation of safety and visibility features such as guardrails, reflective pavement markers, and street lighting, as well as river training work and painting of the steel girders beneath the bridges.

The reopening is expected to ease travel for businesses, transporters, and daily commuters along the vital highway.
