The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has called on the newly appointed Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre, Allan Kasujja, to use his media expertise to amplify government programs and ensure that Ugandans are well informed about national development initiatives.
Mayiga made the remarks at Bulange Mengo while meeting Kasujja, who had paid a courtesy visit aimed at strengthening collaboration between the Buganda Kingdom and the government media body.
“We need a strong and effective communication system that helps citizens understand the various government programs intended to improve their livelihoods,” Mayiga said. “Your experience in media should be used to clearly explain what government is doing so that people can benefit from these initiatives.”
Kasujja’s visit to Mengo marks the beginning of renewed cooperation between Buganda Kingdom and the Uganda Media Centre, with both sides expressing commitment to improving information flow across the country.
In his remarks, Kasujja praised the Katikkiro for initiatives that support economic empowerment, particularly the “Mwanyi Terimba” coffee campaign, which he said has significantly uplifted communities.
“The ‘Mwanyi Terimba’ initiative has transformed many households by encouraging people to invest in coffee growing as a sustainable source of income,” Kasujja noted. “It is one of the examples of programs that deserve wider visibility.”
Mayiga congratulated Kasujja upon his appointment and commended his contribution to journalism, especially during his tenure at the BBC.
“We congratulate you upon this new responsibility and thank you for the work you have done representing Uganda on the international stage,” Mayiga said. “We believe your experience will add great value to this role.”
He reiterated the need for proactive communication, urging the Media Centre to bridge the information gap between government and the public.
“There are many good programs and achievements that people are not aware of. It is important that such information reaches citizens in a timely and clear manner,” he emphasized.
Meanwhile, the Buganda Kingdom Minister for Information and spokesperson, Israel Kazibwe Kitooke, welcomed the partnership, noting that it would enhance the quality and coordination of communication between the kingdom and government institutions.
“This collaboration will strengthen the dissemination of accurate and timely information, benefiting both Buganda and the wider Ugandan public,” Kazibwe said.
The meeting underscores a shared commitment to using media as a tool for development, with leaders emphasizing the importance of informed citizens in driving socio-economic transformation.
