Kampala International University’s Kenya property, a 61.3-acre parcel of land with unfinished educational structures, has been scheduled for a public auction on Wednesday, Aug. 27, by Keysian Auctioneers.
The auction will take place at 11 a.m. at the auctioneer’s offices in Nairobi. The property is in the Kiasju area of Kajiado, about 1.6 kilometers off Namanga Road. The sale is being conducted on behalf of an unspecified chargee, suggesting the university may have defaulted on a loan.
According to the auction notice, the property includes a four-story administration block, a five-story dining hall, a three-story guesthouse, a four-story powerhouse and a four-bedroom bungalow. All structures are incomplete.
To bid, interested parties must deposit 5 million Kenyan shillings (approximately $38,000 U.S.) in cash or a banker’s check. A 10% down payment is required from the winning bidder, with the balance due within 90 days.
The auction follows a protracted legal dispute stemming from a $10 million loan KIU secured in January 2014 to develop the campus. A legal battle ensued over a $5 million portion of the loan that was never disbursed. An arbitrator ruled in favor of Housing Finance in 2019, a decision later upheld by the High Court and Court of Appeal. The Supreme Court of Kenya dismissed KIU’s final appeal, clearing the way for the sale.
Kampala International University, a private, not-for-profit institution chartered in Uganda, has not issued a public statement on the matter. The university has its main campus in Kampala, Uganda, and a Western Campus in Ishaka, Uganda, in addition to a college in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
