Kampala– Makindye Chief Magistrates Court has former Lord Mayor of Kampala and Senior Lawyer Erias Lukwago with a charge of Misprision of treason.
On appearing before Makindye Chief Magistrate, Anna Sarah Basemera, Lukwago who appeared weak denied the charges.
Through his lawyers led by Hon. Medard Lubega Ssegona, he applied to be released on bail due to the reason that his health has been deteriorating since his arrest, he presented to Court sureties whom he asked court to find to be substantial to appear his presence in court wherever he is required to do so.
The lawyers also presented in Court Medical documents to support the ground that Lukwago is not in stable health condition and asked Court to protect them safely since they are private.
“As earlier prayed, I pray that you be pleased to grant bail as a matter of life and death especially for the fear of irreversible stroke. I so pray.” Submitted Counsel Medard Ssegona
The lawyer also prayed to court that Incase bail has not been granted, Court should be pleased to allow Lukwago carry an orthopedic mattress which was prescribed to him by his physician and allow him have access to his prescribed meals.
The trial Magistrate has remanded Lukwago to Luzira Prison until Monday 22nd June 2026, for mentioning of his case and delivering her ruling on bail.
Misprision of treason refers to the alleged failure to report knowledge of plans to overthrow or unlawful change of the government to the relevant authorities.
Prosecution contends that, between 2021 & 2024 in Nairobi, Lukwago together with others allegedly became aware of treason-related plans but didn’t report to the relevant authorities.
Lukwago was picked by the Security personnel on Monday morning, from his home in Wakaliga, a city suburb. Since then, his whereabouts have not been clearly known, until on Wednesday Morning when he was dropped at Kira Police Division.
Before being driven to Court, relatives, friends and many political actors in the country turned up to stand in solidarity with Lukwago.
