NAMAYINGO – Leading opposition presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, also known asBobi Wine, says Military and the police have arrested and detained his entire campaign team in the country’s eastern region.
He says has been waylaid by police and Military in a swamp on his way from Mbale to Namayingo.
“Yet again we have been way laid by the regime police and militarily in a swamp on our way from Mbale to Namayingo and all our new campaign team has been arrested including security, medical and media personnel,” Bobi Wine said in a message on his Facebook.
Members of his campaign team including security, medical and the media have been detained.
No further details of their arrest have yet been made available.
Bobi Wine is challenging incumbent President Yoweri Museveni — who has been in power for more than 30 years — in January 14 elections.
The presidential candidate has accused Museveni of being a dictator responsible for human rights abuses, after at least 45 people were killed in protests last month sparked by Wine’s earlier arrest for contravening coronavirus regulations at a campaign rally.
While authorities have said the restrictions are necessary to curb the spread of Covid-19, opposition members and their supporters say they are an excuse to limit campaigning before the election.
