MUBS Leadership Commended for steering the institution to Greater Heights

ENTEBBE– Makerere University Business School (MUBS) Council has held a meeting with the Management, to reflect on their achievements in the previous years, as well as laying strategies for making this institution to the list of the top Business institutions in Africa.

During the two day meeting held at Imperial Resort Hotel in Munyonyo, council members have applauded MUBS management led by the Prof. Moses Muhwezi , the Principal for the hard work and sacrifice in ensuring that the institution adopts new teaching innovations on top of passing out, quality graduates who have played a commendable role towards the development of Uganda’s economy.

Prof Augustus Nuwagaba , the Deputy Governor Bank of Uganda commended MUBS management led by Prof Muhwezi, for always providing the banking sector with top notch Bankers and urged them to continue with the same trend.

“I would like to advise the council, that during this meeting, we should find means of coming up with a unique feature in our teaching or special benefit which is not in other Higher institutions of learning. We need to keep asking ourselves that incase the Government closes MUBS now, what do we lose as Country?”

Nuwagaba also promised to use his expertise in the economic sector as well as his position at the Council to push for introduction of Professors of Practice (People who have practically excelled in the business sector) , to come and take students through practical experiences at the institution.

Ms. Olivia Birungi Lumonya, the Chairperson for the MUBS Council, revealed that the main reason for converging the meeting and induction exercise of the new Council members , is to assist them understand more about their roles and responsibilities towards the governance and Management of the institution.

“This induction marks a new chapter in our journey and core mandate. To uphold MUBS’ mission and vision, we must commit to effective governance, ensuring sustainable growth and collective responsibility. Our role is to provide oversight, support the university’s core mandate, and build a strong, sustainable image for MUBS.” Said Lumonya.

Basing on the qualifications and  experience of the Council members, Lumonya emphasized it , that she has no doubt, this team is capable of transforming MUBS into a world class educational institution.

Prof. Moses Muhwezi, the Principal of Makerere University Business School (MUBS) in his detailed report about the institution’s performance in the past five years, highlighted that they have registered an increment in students enrollment, increased funding from Government, increment in staff , salaries as well as Students’ overall performance.

“We have faculty of Management, it has three departments with a total close to 2000 students, Faculty of Entrepreneurship and small business management, Faculty of Business Administration with 4000 students, thus making it a faculty with the highest number of students. Faculty of Commerce, our oldest faculty with four departments, Faculty of Computing and informatics, Faculty of Leisure and Hospitality which has courses on very high demand today.” Remarked Muhwezi

He pointed out that they also have other faculties with all their Deans present in the meeting.

That MUBS also offers 15 Postgraduate programs, 19 Undergraduate Programs, 11 Post graduate Programs.

“We have four study Campuses to decongest the center across the country, enable even people upcountry to access quality education. People there pay 60 to 70 percent of the fees paid for the same course at the main campus.”

That the Jinja Campus started in 2006 and is housed at YMCA, Mbarara Campus established in 2006, Arua started in 2006 and Mbale in 2012.

In terms of Financing, Muhwezi revealed that government funding to the institution has greatly improved from 96.8 billion shillings to 139.2 Billion shillings in financial year 2024/25 and in 2025-26, the budget rose to 154 billion shillings.
