A coordinated operation by police and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) in Katega village, Kyampisi sub-county, Mukono District, has led to the arrest of five suspects accused of stealing electricity wires. The suspects, identified as Ntale Peter, Kyalisima Adolf, Hamis Kaye Rashid, Kajubi ISA, and Nabulya Miracle, were caught red-handed with stolen wires, UMEME uniforms, and other related equipment on November 15, 2024.
According to police, intelligence information prompted the operation, which began at around 12:25 PM. The suspects were found with two rows of ABC conductor electric wires, and a search of Hamis Kaye Rashid’s vehicle, registration number UBQ585K, revealed additional wires. Further searches at Ntale Peter’s residence uncovered UMEME uniforms, climbing shoes, belts, and other electrical equipment.
The community became agitated and attempted to lynch the suspects, but police intervened to secure the scene. All five suspects are currently in police custody awaiting prosecution.
Notably, this is not Ntale Peter’s first arrest for theft and vandalism. He was previously apprehended on April 23, 2023, for similar offenses and has made multiple court appearances, only to be released on bail each time. Kajubi ISA has also been linked to theft incidents in the area, with his motorcycle left behind during a prior escape after committing vandalism on November 4, 2024. Kyalisima Adolf’s motorcycle was also found with UMEME uniforms and climbing shoes.
Ntale Peter appears to be a key figure behind the thefts in Mukono District and surrounding areas. The police are continuing their investigations into the matter. The operation is part of efforts to curb the rising cases of vandalism in Kyampisi sub-county.
Similar cases of vandalism have been reported in other parts of the country, with perpetrators facing serious consequences. For instance, a man was recently sentenced to four years in prison for stealing 60 meters of copper cable in Rakai. The police are working to disrupt such criminal networks and bring perpetrators to justice.
