KAMPALA — President Yoweri Museveni has slammed reports that his poverty alleviation program, Emyooga initiative has stunded and also dismissed reports that money was stolen.
While addressing the country on Saturday night, the President gave accountability and the progress made through the initiative that he said the program was introduced to benefit people in the other areas of the economy who had been left out the agriculture focused Operation Wealth Creation and NAADs.
“Some people have been saying that it has not had impact but it. Emyooga has registered commendable progress,” he said, revealing that his administration has since injected upto UGX 260 billion as seed capital.
Museveni said he had been briefed by the line Minister that by July 2021, upto UGX 2013 billion had been dispersed to beneficiaries.
The figure, represents 81% of the planned disbursement, according to available data.
Another UGX 27 billion had been saved by saccos all over the country by June 2021, he said.
“This is impressive and gives signals program will continue in the future. Emyooga is a very good idea. It will work since it creates a residential bank for these people. I have been told of a few cases of indiscipline but asked minister to deal with them.”
President Museveni asked Microfinance Minister Haruna Kasolo to explain more about the initiative through media outreaches.
Deputy Speaker of Parliament Anita Among had last week has suspended the House sittings to allow legislators to investigate the implementation of the Emyooga progamme
This followed numerous public complaints to the speaker about misappropriation and irregularities in the disbursement of the funds.
