President Yoweri Museveni met with Iranian Ambassador Majid Saffar on Sunday to discuss strengthening bilateral cooperation between Kampala and Tehran.
The high-level talks took place in Kyankwanzi, where the president is currently hosting the envoy for a courtesy call. Museveni said the two leaders focused on issues of mutual interest and cooperation.
Uganda and Iran have maintained diplomatic ties since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. The relationship has been defined by partnerships in trade, energy, health and agriculture.
The meeting included Foreign Affairs Minister Jeje Odongo. It comes as Saffar continues a diplomatic push to expand Iran’s presence in East Africa. While international tensions persist between Iran and the U.S., Saffar has maintained that Tehran’s regional outreach is defensive and focused on partnership.
Museveni’s role as chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement adds a layer of diplomatic significance to the talks. Iran is also a member of the NAM, and Museveni has frequently engaged with Iranian leadership regarding stability in the Middle East and broader global affairs.
Officials said the meeting signals a commitment to sustain dialogue and explore new economic and political partnerships.
