Bushenyi Ishaka Municipality lawmaker Iddi Bassajja has officially entered the race for deputy speaker of the Ugandan Parliament, challenging incumbent Thomas Tayebwa for the 2026-2031 term.
Bassajja, who secured his parliamentary seat in the Jan. 15 general election, confirmed his candidacy in an interview with Eagle Online. He positioned himself as the definitive challenger for the role.
“I am the official candidate for the position of deputy speaker,” Bassajja said. “And should anyone else doubt, please confirm to them that I have said so and I am available and ready to confirm.”
The newly elected legislator is the son of businessman Hassan Basajjabalaba. In a statement shared on X, formerly Twitter, Bassajja thanked his constituents for their support before outlining his vision for the national stage. He said his bid is motivated by a commitment to honesty and national service.
Bassajja pledged that his leadership would prioritize inclusivity and adhere to constitutional principles. He noted that his goal is to lead in a way that reflects the aspirations of all Ugandans.
The move sets up a high-stakes internal political contest as the new parliament prepares to convene and elect its presiding officers.
