KAMPALA, Uganda — The Patriotic League of Uganda has withdrawn its endorsement of Anita Annet Among and Thomas Tayebwa for the leadership of the 12th Parliament.
In a statement released Tuesday, PLU Secretary General David Kabanda said the decision to retract support for the current speaker and deputy speaker followed a directive from the group’s chairman, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Muhoozi had previously instructed PLU-leaning members of Parliament-elect on March 11 to support Among for speaker and Tayebwa for deputy speaker. The new communication announced that the endorsement has been retracted and withdrawn with immediate effect.
The leadership has now advised its members to support the candidates officially presented by President Yoweri Museveni for the two positions.
Kabanda said members of the political pressure group are expected to follow the instructions and guidance of Muhoozi at all times.
The shift in support is expected to heighten political maneuvering as parties and pressure groups finalize their positions ahead of the election for the top legislative offices.
