Police officer in handcuffs over barmaid rape

MASAKA, UGANDA – A 55-year-old police corporal, Richard Otim, has been detained by authorities in Masaka for allegedly raping a 29-year-old barmaid at Paradise Bar in Kyabakuza.

According to reports, CPL Otim, attached to the Kimaanya Kabonera police division headquarters in Masaka City, entered the victim’s room while she was asleep, covered her mouth, and forcibly engaged in unprotected sexual intercourse.

The victim, whose identity remains protected, works as both a barmaid and a sex worker. Following the incident, CPL Otim allegedly fled the scene, prompting the victim to report the matter to her employer, who advised her to file a police report.

The case has been registered under Kim Kab SD ref 09/02/10/2024 and CRB:294/2024. Both the victim and CPL Otim have undergone medical examinations as part of the investigation.

Preliminary inquiries reveal that CPL Otim was a frequent patron of the bar, well-known to staff and patrons. Further investigations are underway to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Uganda Police Force has taken swift action against CPL Otim, demonstrating its commitment to accountability within the force.

The Masaka Police Department is urging anyone with information regarding this incident to come forward. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are working to ensure justice is served.
