KAMPALA, Uganda – Qatar is set to open a resident embassy in Uganda, upgrading its diplomatic representation in a move both nations say reflects deepening bilateral relations and growing economic cooperation.
The decision was formalized after the Ambassador-designate of the State of Qatar, Ahmed Mohammed Abdulrahman Abdullah Al Zwaidi, presented copies of his credentials to Uganda’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in Charge of Regional Affairs, John Mulimba, in Kampala on Thursday.
Ambassador-designate Al Zwaidi delivered greetings from his government, stating it was an honor to be appointed as the first resident ambassador to Uganda.
Until now, the Qatari Embassy accredited to Uganda has operated on a non-resident basis from Nairobi. Uganda already maintains a resident embassy in Doha.
Minister Mulimba welcomed the announcement, calling the opening of a resident embassy a “true testimony” of growing relations. He also congratulated Qatar on the successful conclusion of the second edition of the Uganda-Qatar Business Forum in October 2025.
Mulimba highlighted the steady growth in trade over the past decade. He noted that Uganda’s exports to Qatar have increased from $20 million to $34 million, while Qatar’s exports to Uganda have risen from $17 million to $26 million.
“With the presence of Resident Ambassadors in both countries, trade volumes between Uganda and Qatar are expected to multiply further,” Mulimba said.
He identified potential areas for collaboration, including agro-processing, tourism, manufacturing, minerals, oil and gas, and technological transfer in science and innovation.
Ambassador-designate Al Zwaidi confirmed that Qatar intends to sign several Memorandums of Understanding in these key economic fields, as well as in the area of diplomatic consultations.
As evidence of already improving ties, he pointed to the recent increase in direct flights from Qatar to Entebbe, which has doubled from one to two daily flights, improving trade and the movement of people between the two countries.
