KAMPALA – A high-stakes theft at the prestigious Serena Hotel has landed a porter in custody after he allegedly swiped $12,000 intended to purchase a gift for South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit.
William Ssemata, 39, a resident of Nansana Village in Wakiso District, was remanded to Luzira Prison following his appearance before Grade One Magistrate Rophine Achayo at Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court. Ssemata faces a single count of theft under the Penal Code Act.
The brazen heist unfolded after Brigadier General Aaron Jeremiah Balla of the South Sudanese army arrived at Entebbe International Airport from Malaysia on April 12. The general was carrying more than $12,000 in cash specifically earmarked to buy a watch for President Kiir.
Upon the general’s arrival at the five-star hotel, Ssemata was assigned the routine task of delivering three suitcases and a handbag to the officer’s room. However, the routine delivery turned into a criminal investigation when the cash was discovered missing shortly after.
According to Hotel Assistant Security Manager Moses Olowo, the hotel’s internal security measures proved pivotal. CCTV footage reportedly captured Ssemata as the sole staff member handling the luggage. The recordings showed him entering a lift alone with the bags, with no other individuals gaining access to the items before they reached the guest’s room.
Prosecutor Grace Amy told the court that investigations into the disappearance of the funds are still underway. Ssemata, who was apprehended on April 18, did not enter a plea during his Monday appearance.
Trial Chief Magistrate Ritah Neumbe Kidasa is expected to preside over the plea hearing on May 13. Until then, the man accused of intercepting the presidential gift funds remains behind bars.
