Authorities in Uganda have arrested five individuals over the alleged unlawful eviction of a Catholic priest from disputed land in Mpigi District.
The arrests were carried out by the State House Anti-Corruption Unit in collaboration with the Uganda Police Force following a complaint regarding a land dispute in Ntinzi Village, Nkozi Sub-county.
The suspects have been identified as Sande Godfrey, Kyebale Daniel, Lukyamuzi Eric, Magawuli Geoffrey, and Odida Paul, who claims ownership of the contested titled land. Authorities allege that Odida, who claims ownership of 100 acres, unlawfully directed the four others to forcibly occupy a disputed five-acre portion currently under the tenancy of Catholic priest Fr. Bwanika Edward, a kibanja holder.
According to preliminary reports, the suspects allegedly destroyed crops belonging to Fr. Bwanika, including coffee and banana plantations, causing significant losses. The priest, described as a longstanding occupant of the land, reportedly suffered extensive damage to his livelihood.
Investigators say the operation leading to the arrests was conducted after authorities received complaints about the alleged forceful occupation. The suspects were apprehended while still occupying the disputed land.
Police have launched further investigations into the matter, with the suspects expected to face charges related to forcible entry and malicious damage to property. The incident has raised concerns over land rights and the protection of lawful occupants amid increasing land disputes in the country.
