KAMPALA —The NRM director for Mobilisation, Recruitment and Cadre Development, Rosemary Sseninde, has called on St. Balikuddembe Market also known as Owino Market traders to take advantage of government programmes such as the Parish Development Model and Emyooga—describing them as great blocks towards achieving the much sought-after middle income status.

Sseninde who addressed two boisterous crowds of hundreds of thousands of traders – many are youth in St. Balikuddembe Market on Tuesday was in the market to celebrate with the two sports teams who emerged victors at the recently concluded Suzan Cup, organized by Owino Market Chairperson Suzan Kushaba.

Gonya Zone won the football final and President Museveni gave them a bull to slaughter and celebrate their triumph.

Nkoko Zone were second after losing to Gonya in the final at KCCA’s Lugogo Stadium last week.

Kushaba hailed Ms. Sseninde for walking with Owino traders for a very long time including petitioning Parliament to resolve the issues of Owino Market.

Kushaba said its was Ms. Sseninde’s petition to Parliament that saved Owino Market from decades of bad leadership.

She also praised traders for having confidence in her to lead the market to greater heights. Kushaba equally lauded Suzan Cup organizing committee for a job well done in ensuring that the competition was a success.

In her remarks, Kushaba who is praised by traders for shielding them against injustices told Ms. Sseninde that the young people had shunned NRM because they were being harassed by some in the party. But when she became chairperson, Kushaba put up structures, including ensuring that zones have their own leaders.

Kushaba went on to tell Sseninde that the youth had a lot of issues they want the government to resolve.

Gonya Zone won the football final and President Museveni gave them a bull to slaughter and celebrate their triumph.

She explained that the traders were battling the aftereffects of the pandemic and now needed help to ably revive their businesses.

She asked the NRM chief mobilizer to help Owino Market traders access Parish Development Model (PDM) funds, saying they missed out on Emyooga funds. She also asked for funds to help promote talent in Owino, saying the market was full of very gifted footballers, athletes and singers.

“These people don’t hate the government, they don’t want to join demonstrations. They just need help so that they can work and have money in their pockets. Most of the funds for women and youth programs have not trickled to the markets. These people just want help and better services,” added Kushaba.

The joyous Sseninde commended Kushaba’s able leadership, saying that President Museveni is so happy on how she’s improving Owino Market’s situation.

Ms. Sseninde who is remembered for petitioning Parliament over Owino assured traders that the president had directed that the current leadership committees in all city markets should remain in place.

She urged traders to shun selfish and misleading politicians —urging them to focus on engaging themselves in income-generating programmes. She assured them of President Museveni’s full support and willingness to help them out of poverty.

Sseninde underscored the need for everyone to understand government Initiatives, including leaders and the program beneficiaries, if the programmes are to achieve its intended purpose— revealing that government would soon embark on a sensitization campaign to make sure that people in markets understand the PDM and use it to create more wealth.
