KAMPALA, Uganda — August 26, 2025 — Stanbic Bank Uganda has rewarded the Black Pirates Rugby Club’s recent success on the pitch with a contract extension of its seven-year long sponsorship partnership for another three years.
The announcement was made at vibrant signing ceremony before the press during which the team’s new kit was also unveiled ahead of the highly anticipated Rujumba Sevens Rugby Tournament at King Park Arena—this weekend.
“We are more than pleased to extend this partnership with the Black Pirates. This past season, they made our brand proud with many battlefield victories at sea, and we would like to see them do even more.
Uganda is a young country and as a brand we acknowledge the role of sports in inspiring young people to dream big and achieve greatness and these values resonate strongly with the Stanbic Bank brand,” said Akot Apel Rita, Stanbic Bank’s Chief Information Officer.
Daniel Canowira, Chairperson of the Black Pirates, hailed the relationship as a cornerstone of the club’s recent success. “Since donning the Stanbic jersey, we have celebrated multiple trophy wins— including the current 2025 title. This has been our most successful chapter,” Canowira said.
He added, “Stanbic is more than a sponsor — it is a pillar of strength and accountability for the club. According to the latest Uganda Rugby Union audit, we stand as one of the most organized and well governed clubs in the Rugby league.”

The renewed sponsorship comes as the Black Pirates prepare to host the Rujumba Sevens, one of Uganda’s premier rugby events. Stanbic Bank pledges to continue energizing the team, fostering camaraderie, and driving a winning spirit on and off the pitch.
This investment extends beyond rugby. As part of its wider commitment to Uganda’s growth, Stanbic Bank supports football through the Stanbic Uganda Cup, as well as basketball and golf initiatives — all with a focus on youth engagement and social inclusion.
For the Rujumba Sevens, the bank’s digital platform, FlexiPay, will serve as the official ticketing and payments channel, ensuring fans enjoy secure, seamless transactions alongside exclusive discounts on beverages.

Beyond sports, Stanbic Bank is accelerating socio-economic development through its Women, Youth, and Farmers (WYF) Agenda — a UGX 1 trillion, three-year strategic investment aimed at empowering these vital sectors with affordable credit and capacity-building efforts.
“Our commitment goes well beyond sponsorship. We are investing strategically to nurture talent, promote excellence, and drive inclusive growth. Together, we celebrate, compete, and build a stronger Uganda,” concluded Akot.
