Kampala – The hearing of a high-profile murder case against Christopher Okello Onyum has commenced under tight security at Gaba Community Centre in Kampala.

Okello, who was escorted from prison by the Uganda Prisons Service with support from the Uganda Police and other security agencies, is accused of murdering four children from Gaba Early Childhood Day Care Centre. The victims have been identified as Eteku Gideon, Keith Agenorwoth Otim, Sseruyange Ignatius, and Odeke Ryan. The alleged crimes were committed on April 2, 2026.
Appearing before Lady Justice Komuhangi Khaukha in a mobile court session, Okello was formally charged and pleaded not guilty to all counts.
The court confirmed that the accused is represented by two lawyers, Kumbuga Richard and Stella Awello, both assigned under state brief in line with the law that guarantees legal representation for all accused persons who cannot afford private counsel.
Prior to the commencement of the hearing, three assessors were sworn in to follow the proceedings and provide independent opinions to guide the court. The assessors include Musana John, a 42-year-old poultry farmer, Teopista Maria, 29, and Ainomugisha Rachel, 37, both residents of Masajja in Wakiso District.
Assessors are members of the public without formal legal training who participate in criminal trials to offer perspectives based on common understanding. However, their opinions are advisory and not legally binding on the court.
The prosecution has begun presenting its case, with witnesses expected to testify in an effort to link Okello to the alleged murders.
