UBOS Asks Local District Leadership To Support the Forthcoming 2024 Census

KAMPALA-The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) Executive Director Chris N. Mukiza (PhD) who also doubles as the Census Commissioner has called upon the Chief Administrative Officers and Town Clerks to support the forth coming National Population and Housing Census 2024. The call was made during their quarterly performance review meeting on Friday at Hotel African in Kampala.

“As the government body, we are responsible for coordinating, monitoring and supervising the National Statistical System and we continue to support Government’s results-based agenda by providing statistics needed for planning and policy formulation. The statistical data and information further supports monitoring performance and development progress of international and national development frameworks. As you are already aware, the National Population and Housing Census 2024 enumeration will commence on 10th May, 2024 for 10th days through a door to door data collection exercise. This will be the first digital census to be conducted in Uganda” he said.

The Census Commissioners also used the for a to inform the Officers that the Bureau has been conducting the Household Listing and Mapping exercise throughout the country and so far 67005 Villages (94%) is completed and 4227(5.9%) is not yet listed. He informed them that the Bureau is now soon to start the same exercise in the Greater Kampala comprising of Kampala, Mukono, and Wakiso districts. He also noted that this is steady progress for the exercise and was grateful to the CAOs and Town Clerks who have been very supportive in ensuring this milestone. He urged those whose areas have not yet been Mapped to 100% to ensure that the exercise is undertaken to completion, as these are some of the parameters to ensure that we generate quality statistical information.

He said that the Bureau is going to work with the District officials to recruit field personnel for the field enumeration exercise and over 120,000 people are to be recruited. “There are appropriate procedures/ guidelines for recruiting and selecting the Enumerators and, therefore, I urge all the leaders to ensure that qualified citizens are recruited to participate this exercise” he emphasized. He said that advert will be run in the newspapers by UBOS but the recruitment will be handled at the districts and city levels with support of the UBOS team.

The Executive Director called upon the CAOs and Town Clerks to be Champions of the forth coming Census by providing usual cooperation and encouraging the population to actively participate in the Census exercise. He promised that the Census preliminary results will be disseminated by June 2024, and this will be followed with the release of the final results by December, 2024.
