Uganda telecommunications sector watchdog, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has canceled its internship and graduate industrial training program for 2020, citing COVID-19 challenges.

In a release to journalist on Saturday morning, the UCC regretted the decision but said it will not be able take on interns this year

“Owing to the disruption occasioned by COVID-19, we regret to inform the public that the commission will not be able take on this year,” UCC noted.

“A new schedule will be communicated as soon as it is prudent to do so. We regret any inconveniences caused,” the release added.

An internship is a period of work experience offered by an organization for a limited period of time.

UCC joins a growing list of government agencies who have cancelled their internship programmes amid the spread of the new coronavirus, which has sent millions of employees home to work remotely.

The list also includes National Social Security Fund (NSSF) and Vision Group.

Commentators believe those numbers may get dramatically worse in the weeks ahead.

Others have told students that they are trying out a remote option or are waiting to make a call on whether to cancel or continue.

The education sector is one of the most affected entities by the COVID-19 pandemic.

As of when education institutions will start operating is still a mystery.
