Merck Foundation honors Ugandan journalists for excellence in health reporting.

KAMPALA, UGANDA — The Merck Foundation has announced the winners of its 2024 Media Recognition Awards, with several Ugandan journalists being recognized for their outstanding work.

The Merck Foundation Africa Media Recognition Awards aim to promote a culture of responsible and sensitive reporting of issues related to infertility, diabetes, and hypertension. The awards are open to journalists from African countries and are given in various categories, including print, online, radio, and multimedia.

In the online category for East African countries, Nteza Michael from UG Standard won third place.

In the radio category for East African countries, Kintu Khalid from Radio Simba won first place.

In the multimedia category for East African countries, Walter Mwesigye from NTV Uganda won first place, while Leonard Kigozi and Isabel Nakirya from CGTN Africa won third place.

The Merck Foundation has been working to improve access to healthcare and education in Africa, particularly in the areas of infertility, diabetes, and hypertension. The foundation’s media awards are part of its efforts to promote a culture of responsible and sensitive reporting on these issues.

The awards ceremony was conducted virtually to honor and celebrate the outstanding contributions of all the winning media professionals. The winners were warmly acknowledged by Senator Dr. Rasha Kelej, CEO of Merck Foundation and President of the “More Than a Mother” campaign.

The Merck Foundation Media Awards launched in 2017, are announced annually, with over 640 Winners from 52 countries celebrated to date.
