Kampala, Uganda – Liberty Life Assurance Uganda has awarded seed funding to several student teams who participated in the inaugural Kuza School Challenge, an initiative that equips secondary school students with essential financial management and entrepreneurial skills.

The program, which kicked off in September 2024, brought together students from Kabojja International School to develop innovative business ideas that address pressing social and community issues. After weeks of intense training, mentorship, and competition, the top teams were awarded seed funding of UGX 2 million each to turn their ideas into reality.

The Kuza School Challenge is designed to bridge the financial literacy gap in Uganda, where only 32% of the population is financially literate. By providing students with hands-on training and expert guidance, Liberty Life Assurance Uganda aims to cultivate a culture of entrepreneurship and social responsibility among the youth.

“We believe that empowering young people with financial skills and knowledge is crucial for Uganda’s economic growth and development,” said Joseph Almeida, Managing Director of Liberty Life Assurance Uganda. “The Kuza School Challenge is our commitment to nurturing the next generation of leaders and entrepreneurs who will drive positive change in their communities.”

The students’ business ideas were impressive, tackling issues such as environmental sustainability, access to education, healthcare, and technology. One of the winning teams, led by Jovita Namakula, developed an online voting platform called Vortex, which aims to make elections more transparent and accessible.

“I’m thrilled to see Vortex take off,” said Namakula. “Winning the 2 million shillings will allow us to enhance the platform and expand its reach. We’re grateful to Liberty Life Assurance Uganda for believing in us and providing the necessary support to turn our vision into reality.”

The Kuza School Challenge has not only equipped students with critical skills but also broadened their perspective on how they can contribute to their communities meaningfully. Divine Vhovha, Deputy Headteacher at Kabojja International School, praised the program’s impact on the students. “We’re grateful to Liberty Life Assurance Uganda for this partnership, and we look forward to seeing the incredible outcomes these projects will achieve.”
