A celebration has been held in Uganda to mark the International Day of Teachers of French.
The event, held at Kyambogo University in Kampala, brought together teachers of French from across the country.
It highlighted the growing importance of the French language in Uganda, particularly in the fields of business, tourism, and international relations.
“French is becoming increasingly important in East Africa, not only for regional integration but also for enhancing Uganda’s tourism sector,” said Agatha Tumwine, President of the Association of Teachers of French in Uganda.
The celebration included a clean-up exercise at Banda Market, where teachers and local officials worked together to promote community hygiene and well-being.
Janya Obrecht, Deputy Head of Mission at the French Embassy, praised the teachers for their dedication to promoting the French language.
“The French Embassy is committed to supporting French education in Uganda, and we are proud to work with such dedicated teachers,” she said.
The event was also attended by Prof. Elizabeth Kyaziike Dean of Students at Kyambogo University, who highlighted the university’s efforts to promote the French language.
Kyambogo University has established a French Corner in its library and a thriving French Club, thanks to the support of the French Embassy.
The celebration was seen as an opportunity to promote the French language and culture in Uganda, and to recognize the important role that teachers of French play in promoting linguistic and cultural diversity.
