KAMPALA, Uganda — The Uganda National Examinations Board has extended the normal registration deadline for the 2026 national examinations to June 30 to accommodate newly accredited examination centers.
UNEB Executive Director Dan Odongo announced Thursday at the Uganda Media Centre that the extension applies to candidates sitting for the Primary Leaving Examination, Uganda Certificate of Education and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education.
Odongo warned that late registration will run from July 1 to July 31 and will attract heavy financial penalties. Late registration will incur a 100 percent surcharge for PLE candidates and a 50 percent surcharge for UCE and UACE candidates.
No candidate registration will be allowed after July 31, Odongo said, urging school heads to complete the process early to avoid system congestion.
The government will continue to cover registration fees for learners under Universal Primary Education, Universal Secondary Education and the Universal Post O-Level Education and Training program.
Registration fees for private candidates remain unchanged at UGX 34,000 for PLE, UGX 164,000 for UCE and UGX 186,000 for UACE.
This year’s UCE candidates represent the third cohort under the Competency Based Curriculum. Under these guidelines, learners must register for a minimum of eight and a maximum of nine subjects.
Odongo cautioned schools against inflating registration costs, noting that charging unauthorized fees and branding them as UNEB requirements is a violation of the UNEB Act. Offenders face heavy penalties, imprisonment and deregistration of their centers.
Parents and guardians can verify candidate registration status and data correctness by sending an SMS to 6600.
Odongo also reminded heads of schools and candidates that the use of erasable pens during examinations remains strictly prohibited.
