KAMPALA — Vision Group has protested a huge TMR International hospital bill— describing it “unnecessarily overrated”.

This was after TMR  International Hospital asked Vision Group to clear UGX.76 million before the body of Samuel Malunda, the Vision Group’s Sales Manager Supplements and Special Projects who died on Sunday June 19 is released for burial.

Malunda succumbed to Covid-19 on Sunday after spending three weeks at the Naalya based Hospital.

Vision Group in a statement released Sunday confirmed Malunda’s death but said
Burial details would be released later.

A source with direct knowledge of the matter at Vision Group said the hospital has demanded upto UGX.76 million, short of that, “it won’t release the body until full payment is made”.

The source who declined to be named as is not authorised to speak for Vision Group said the bill is unnecessarily huge and the Company is only willing to contribute UGX. 35 million.

Private hospitals in Kampala are charging anywhere between between UGX. 2m and UGX 5m per day to treat a critically ill Covid-19 patient, according to a mini-survey by Daily Monitor last week.

The patient spends 14 to 31 days in hospital depending on the severity of the disease, according to medical experts.

This means a critically ill patient spends between UGX. 62m and UGX. 155m.

Uganda’s coronavirus second wave is rapidly sliding into a devastating crisis, with hospitals unbearably full, oxygen supplies running low and mounting evidence that the actual death toll is far higher than officially reported.

Each day, the government reports more than 1000 new infections with experts saying those numbers, however staggering, represent just a fraction of the real reach of the virus’s spread, which has thrown this country into emergency mode.
