KAMPALA, UGANDA — Police in Kampala arrested 67 suspects over the weekend in an anti-drunk driving crackdown dubbed “Kawumyemu.”

The suspects, detained at Katwe, Jinja Road, and Wandegeya police stations, are awaiting court proceedings. According to SP Michael Kananura, Communication Liaison Officer and Public Relations Officer for the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety, the arrested individuals are undergoing processing, including statement recording, fingerprinting, and court preparation.

Kananura stated that the operation targeted drivers who operate under the influence of alcohol, particularly on weekends between 6:00 PM and late at night. This reckless behavior has led to numerous avoidable road accidents in Kampala, prompting traffic police to intensify enforcement measures.

“We urge all drivers to refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol, a crucial step towards reducing road crashes and ensuring safer roads for everyone,” Kananura said.

Despite efforts by road safety activists to raise awareness about responsible driving, many motorists continue to ignore the dangers of reckless and drunk driving. Uganda loses an average of 14 lives daily to road crashes, with many incidents attributed to reckless driving and alcohol impairment.
