MUKONO, Uganda — Police in Mukono are investigating a tragic road accident that killed three people and injured nine others Monday night when a Fuso truck lost control on the Kampala-Jinja Highway.
The fatal crash occurred around 9 p.m. in Wantoni, Mukono Municipality, involving a Fuso truck (UBB 422U), several Toyota Hiace taxis (UBP 359W, UAW 042E, UAQ 398L) and multiple motorcycles.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SSP Patrick Onyango said preliminary findings suggest the Fuso truck experienced brake failure. The driver then lost control and veered into the opposite lane, colliding with taxis and motorcycles stopped at a stage.
Three people, including two unidentified adult males and one male juvenile, died at the scene. Nine others were injured, including Ssaku Paul, Zafafu Bakiti, Sazza Bashir, Lubega Gerald, Kakumirizi Jackson, Nasaza Aisha, Nafuna Irene, Lubega Denis and Bisirikira Juliet.
Onyango confirmed that the Fuso truck driver fled the scene, and police are actively searching for him.
“The bodies of the deceased were conveyed to Kawolo Hospital for postmortem,” Onyango said. “The injured were taken to various health facilities for treatment.”
Police have launched a full investigation to apprehend the driver and determine the complete circumstances of the crash.
